The plaza is “been born” during the XIX century following the urbanistic transformations that were had to Sorrento. Initially its name was Wide of the Castle. Originally, in fact, there where today the statue of sant'Antonino rises, there was a castle risalente to the epoch of Ferdinando of Aragon (XV century) that you/he/she was demolished in 1843.
In 1844 him procedette to the demolition of the boundaries built along the vallonis, risalenti to Five hundred, and that you/they had developed the role of defended by the raids. Finally in 1866 it was dejected the door of access to the city from the oriental side, said Door of the Plan, to whose summit was found the statue in tufo of Sant'Antonino. You statue was removed to work of its craftsman A. Torrese and you/he/she was systematized on a pillar built near the hotel Rispoli. In 1870 the monument was inaugurated devoted to Torquato Tasso.
