Traditions - Brief notes on: The party of Saint Lucy
Saint Lucy is revered in a small Church of Sorrento to her devoted. The protectress of the sight is considered for the tied up stories to his/her martyrdom. The party of Saint Lucy not only introduces religious aspects but also profane, one of these last ones are the lighting, the evening of December 12, of a bonfire. It is this one tied up ancient ritual to the very delicate passage to a new season, the winter, and it serves to exorcize the diminution of the hours of light and accordingly the “danger of the I don't return any light.”
Every year to Sorrento, on December 13, in concomitance with the celebrations in honor of the Saint, a real feast of the sausage and the roast pig is organized.
It is opportune to also remember that the popular tradition sorrentina has a proverb that is handed down of generation in generation and that preserve still its validity if correctly interpreted: “To holy Lucy nu pass ‘and hen, to Sant'Agnello nu I pass ‘and pecuriello”ossia the time of the sunset and therefore to lower some obscurity, from Saint Lucy in then it begins to delay, in fact it increases of 28 seconds. It is wrong to interpret the motto therefore “the night of Saint Lucy is the longest that there is” in how much from 1582, year which you/he/she entered in vigor the Gregorian reform of the calendar, the bewilderment was annulled among the date of the calendar giuliano and the solstice in winter.
